Drinking & Singing

Why do people choose to get drunk? People get drunk for various reasons: to take pain away; to feel they belong; boredom; to have the courage; or simply to feel good.  The Bible has a great alternative.

18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5)

God reminds us that alcohol does not deliver on its promises.  Instead God says to be filled with the Spirit. What does that look like?

  1. A Spirit filled person speaks for the sake of others. While people get drunk for their own benefit, Christians are to sing songs to benefit others.  If we cannot sing, we can still speak the psalms to one another.
  2. A Spirit filled person is thankful to God. While drinkers complain about the world and people, the Christian sees God’s hand in all things and is quick to share that with others.

Ask God to fill you with his Spirit (Luke 11:13) and practise His practices!  Sing on Sundays, with gusto, and from the heart, so as to lift others who cannot sing that day.  Memorise a psalm that means something to you and speak it to someone.  Thank God for the good things he gives.

Practice makes permanent!
