Living Right

The debate around same sex marriage, and the reaction to the plebiscite, has demonstrated one thing about people; that while all desire that the right thing be done, not everyone agrees as to what is right!

In a nutshell we want ‘righteousness’ but do not know what it is.  We want all the things that righteousness gives (goodness, decency, integrity, worthiness, justice, honesty, and honour) for our society but we do not agree what it is or how to implement it without compromising it.

For the Christian, the right decision is that which aims to please the righteous God.  A way to determine the right thing to do in any situation is to read, reflect, and pray repeatedly on what God’s word has to say on that matter or method.

“Yet they seek Me daily, and delight to know My ways, as a nation that did righteousness,

and did not forsake the ordinance of their God.  They ask of Me the ordinances of justice;

They take delight in approaching God.” (Isaiah 58:2)

Sometimes God’s answer is at odds with others and we must demonstrate to whom we are more committed  – them, ourselves, or God?

“Listen to Me, you who know righteousness, you people in whose heart is My law:  Do not fear the reproach of men, nor be afraid of their insults. (Isaiah 51:7)

All our decisions are done in the confidence that Jesus will return as God moves history towards His righteousness.

“Keep justice, and do righteousness, for My salvation is about to come, and My righteousness to be revealed (Isaiah 56)
