Who is Melchizedek?  For starters, the name Melchizedek means ‘Righteous King’.  He is a mysterious figure who makes a single appearance in the Bible when he meets Abraham after a battle.

18 And King Melchizedek of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High. 19 He blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, maker of heaven and earth; 20 and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him one-tenth of everything. (Genesis 14)

This King of Salem (Peace) was also a priest of our God.  He blessed Abraham and in turn Abraham honoured him by gifting him 1/10 of his possessions.

King David mentions him in Psalm 110.

1 The Lord says to my lord, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.” 2 The Lord sends out from Zion your mighty sceptre. Rule in the midst of your foes. 3 Your people will offer themselves willingly on the day you lead your forces on the holy mountains….4The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” (Psalm 110)

King David speaks of someone he calls ‘my Lord’ who sits at God’s right hand.  His ‘Lord’ would not leave that place until God releases Him to rule (v.1).  This coming king would be a priest just like Melchizedek – representing God and offering the blessings of God.  But who is this king?

Jesus is the righteous priest, King of Peace, who brings divine blessing.  Do you honour Him like Abraham honoured Melchizedek?
