Did you know that Santa Claus was a real bloke? The word ‘Santa Claus’ comes from ‘Saint Nicholas’. Nicholas was a Christian man born in Patara Turkey around 270AD. He was so serious about following Jesus that, after both his parents died, he used all his family inheritance to care for the poor. When he became the bishop of Myra (also in Turkey) he used his influence to fight for the freedom of three men who were falsely imprisoned. Nicholas died on 6 December 343AD.
What inspired Nicholas to be so generous? I suspect it was Christ’s generosity to him that fuelled his generosity to others.
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9)
Sadly, our modern culture has mythologised practical Christian generosity into something else. Lets recover the real Santa by following in his steps as he followed in Christs steps.
This Christmas please celebrate the generosity of Christ to you, and participate in his generosity to others. Give of yourself to others as Christ did for you. Teach children about Santa – a Christian bloke who served Christ where God put him.
