Tested by God

 23 Search me, God, and know my heart;

test me and know my anxieties.

24 See if there is any offensive way in me;

lead me in the everlasting way.

Psalm 139

In this powerful prayer King David makes 4 demands of God. These demands build upon each other to prepare David for following God into life eternal.

  1. David wants God to search him to know his heart – “God who am I really and what do I want from life?”
  2. David also wants God ‘to test him’ in a way that clarifies his anxieties. David knows that when anxieties are made clear, then what he really hopes in is also made clear.
  3. Thirdly, David then wants God ‘to see’ or evaluate his hopes, expectations, and behaviours as to whether they are ‘hurtful’ or ‘offensive’ to God. David seems prepared to make changes in his life for God.
  4. Finally, David asks God for his leadership for he knows that only God knows the way and only God can keep him in the way.

Why not pray this every time you get anxious in 2017? Don’t be too quick to eliminate the anxiety.  Rather stop; look at it; challenge the expectations behind the anxieties; make those changes that please God knowing he guides you through every test towards eternity and not merely happiness. Why not do this with another Christian to keep each other accountable and strong!

If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons;

for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? (Heb 12:7)
