Spirituality is Spreading

Covid has caused people to think more spiritually. Google searches for “prayer” have surged worldwide in step with the surge of emerging cases of Covid-19, according to a European researcher.

The rising interest in seeking information about “prayer” on Google “skyrocketed during the month of March 2020 when Covid-19 went global,” wrote Jeanet Sinding Bentzen, an associate professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Copenhagen…

Using Google Trends data on internet searches for “prayer” for 75 countries, she said she found that “search intensity for ‘prayer’ doubles for every 80,000 new registered cases of Covid-19.”

People are so affected by Covid that they are googling how to pray! This is great news because people are finally turning to God. This is also sad news because they don’t know how to engage with God.

Relax! This not a new problem. In Luke 11:1-4 we read:

… one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” So, He said to them,
“When you pray, say;
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us day by day our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins, as we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
Do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

Let us pray like Christians, speaking confidently to our Father in heaven. Let us be concerned for his reputation and kingdom coming in people’s lives. Let us relax in his providence. Let us live and forgive like him. Let us teach others the Lord’s prayer!
